Imperfect

IMPERFECT. Organic mixed media & digital 3D printing.

This Bonsai tree with attached white synthetic appendage explores a modern day relationship between man and nature. It reflects our hopeless and reckless struggles to keep what is already perfect…perfect.

Day 1: On the hunt for the perfect Bonsai.

Day 1: Yen teaches me how to trim the Bonsai

Day 1: John and Yen

Day 1: John shows me how to wire the Bonsai to make the branches bow down to the ground. He explains the bonsai extends beauty and expresses the significance of life.

Day 2: Driving my Bonsai to SculptCad in order to digitally map and create the appendage on the computer.

Day 12: Many trips back and forth to SculptCad with my Bonsai in tow.

Day 22: More trips and more trips back to SculptCad.. I am becoming fond of this little tree.

Day 38: Finished the white appendage and I attached it to the tree. I took this photo outside my studio.

FYI… This Bonsai was not harmed in any way. I initially was going to saw off one of the branches and replace it with the white appendage. After learning more of the practice of the Bonsai and the teachings from John and Yen…. instead I decided to just give the little tree a new limb. I added a sleeve.

ps. Yen told me after my purchase that if my Bonsai ever gets ill bring it back and she will nurse it to health… at no charge. She is wonderful!

When Architect Richard Keating began his vision for the Chase Tower, he placed emphasis on the building’s “contributions to the environment, the fabric of the culture, and its “real estate strategy”.

To most people in the MetroPlex, Chase Tower is known as the keyhole building. As a newcomer to Dallas, Artist Shane Pennington viewed the keyhole at the top of the building as an architectural feat working with nature – allowing the elements of light, water, and air to pass through the building.

Much like Keating, Pennington also studied Chase’s surroundings and Keating’s master plan for Chase Tower – key factors “integral to the success of the total space” as quoted by the architect himself. As important as was the outside architecture to downtown Dallas for Keating, Pennington wanted to capture the same uniqueness and natural setting for its lobby, its tenants, guests and visitors. He spent many an hour doing research on the building, sitting in the lobby and gardens, observing people walk the building throughout the day, and the sky lobby where the keyhole is located.

To Pennington, the dandelions symbolize growth, goodwill, and prosperity. Their travels seem effortless. It is a reminder of our own wish and voyage to a peaceful destination. “My vision was to bring all of the amazing architecture and nature of the surrounding gardens in side the lobby and use digital video as movement to give the viewers a sense of weightlessness. At one point in our lives we have chosen a dandelion, blown its seeds and watched as they flew away. Cheerful, familiar, and common to everyone, the dandelion takes flight with us on our journey through life.”

Shane Pennington has donated a sculpture to the Dallas Contemporary for their Wish Art Auction. “Wish! Auction raises money for an amazing space that will give young artists an opportunity to show in a national context. We are honored to support this annual fundraising event,” Pomara remarked. “Ludwig and I see the potential of the new space. Wish! is more than just an auction. It is about having a space in Dallas to show young emerging artists and how essential it is for young careers to develop.” Dallas Contemporary’s Wish! Auction is gaining national attention for its exceptional art for auction. In the July 2007 article of The Wall Street Journal, Lauren A.E. Schuker mentioned Dallas Contemporary as a “well- regarded museum” where you can find “great art for less.” This year’s blueprint-themed auction is sure to be an exciting year for art enthusiasts and collectors.

Curator uses online social network to find and celebrate the talent of local artists. Opening Reception with the Artists: Saturday, May 1, 7-9 p.m. Fresh Faces sets out to highlight the exceptional talent and innovation of 50+ discovered and yet-to-be-discovered artists from the DFW region in this diverse invitational exhibition organized by Dallas curator, Rita Barnard. According to Ms. Barnard, the exhibition “is about finding and bringing new and familiar artists to our cultural community.” The Curator also points out that “the artists who are participating in the show may be well-known or emerging artists. They may have gallery experience, or this may be a first-time adventure for them.” An interesting aspect of the exhibition is the approach used by Ms. Barnard to identify potential artists for the show. The Curator’s method is based, in great part, on the reliance of the social network Facebook as a new and effective networking tool that may be used to discover exceptionally talented artists online and to promote their outstanding creations to larger audiences.

The artists participating in the Fresh Faces exhibition are: Anita Horton, Anna Palmer, Benjamin Vincent, Brad Abrams, Bruce Schiefelbein, Charlotte Seifert, Cheryll McLennan, Chris Brown, Daniel Birdsong, Daniel Rivera, Darrah Goodin, Darrell Madis, Tom Sale, S. Elisabeth Schalij, Ellen Soffer, Fannie Britto, Greg Metz, Greg Stinson, Heather Gorham, Ippi Lincoln, Jack Brockette, Joseph Wickman, Laura Abrams, Matt Bagley, Rita Barnard, Shane Pennington, Jessica Sublet, J Lynn Kelly, Jose Cruz, Joyce Martin, Sandra A. Tedx and the Arts Dallas Arts Distinct unveils a Shane Pennington outdoor temporary art installation in which a traditional Karesansui Japanese rock garden is transformed into a response to the environment and humanity. The rock garden will feature larger-than-life human figures carved out of single blocks of ice. Over the course of the 48 hour installation, the ice melts slowly into the garden. Each sculptured human figure will have a large single rock encased within its form. As the human ice form melts, the rock gently falls into the garden, reflecting transformation and enlightenment of the human spirit.
