Tedx and the Arts Dallas Arts Distinct unveils a Shane Pennington outdoor temporary art installation in which a traditional Karesansui Japanese rock garden is transformed into a response to the environment and humanity. The rock garden will feature larger-than-life human figures carved out of single blocks of ice. Over the course of the 48 hour installation, the ice melts slowly into the garden. Each sculptured human figure will have a large single rock encased within its form. As the human ice form melts, the rock gently falls into the garden, reflecting transformation and enlightenment of the human spirit.

This Bonsai tree with attached white synthetic appendage explores a modern day relationship between man and nature. It reflects our hopeless and reckless struggles to keep what is already perfect…perfect.

Day 1: On the hunt for the perfect Bonsai.

Day 1: Yen teaches me how to trim the Bonsai

Day 1: John and Yen

Day 1: John shows me how to wire the Bonsai to make the branches bow down to the ground. He explains the bonsai extends beauty and expresses the significance of life.

Day 2: Driving my Bonsai to SculptCad in order to digitally map and create the appendage on the computer.

Day 12: Many trips back and forth to SculptCad with my Bonsai in tow.

Day 22: More trips and more trips back to SculptCad.. I am becoming fond of this little tree.

Day 38: Finished the white appendage and I attached it to the tree. I took this photo outside my studio.

FYI… This Bonsai was not harmed in any way. I initially was going to saw off one of the branches and replace it with the white appendage. After learning more of the practice of the Bonsai and the teachings from John and Yen…. instead I decided to just give the little tree a new limb. I added a sleeve.

ps. Yen told me after my purchase that if my Bonsai ever gets ill bring it back and she will nurse it to health… at no charge. She is wonderful!
